The Chucalissa Archaeological Museum is built on the site of a Mississippian-period (A.D. 900-1600) Native American village. Dioramas and displays of artifacts discovered in the area provide a fascinating history of the Mississippi River Valley Native Americans. These people reached their greatest degree of cultural development during the Mississippian period, when large villages were constructed on bluffs above the Mississippi. Sun worship, mound building, and a distinctive artistic style that can be seen in many of the relics displayed here characterized this society. The reconstructed village includes several family dwellings, a shaman's hut, and a chief's temple atop a mound in the centre of the village compound. The chance to walk through a real archaeologist's trench and to explore a Native American village thrills most children. Also make sure to visit the C.H. Nash Museum, its associated collections and research facilities are fascinating and illuminate the curiosities of the village. This site features information on the museum, research information, and the opportunity to purchase authentic Native American Arts and Crafts as well as books and music. Take a step back in time to explore the culture of a people who flourished before the first Europeans set foot in the Mississippi Valley! |
